The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often referred to as the LDS) has made the International Genealogical Index (the "IGI") available on the internet at familysearch.org. England LDS Batch# to c.1659
6940405 to 6949426. The source is a card index to early ward and branch records of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, created by Minnie Margetts. You may find parents' names; birthrate and place; date of blessing, baptism, confirmation, and ordination; name of ward; name of stake; and sometimes death date, age, and residence. The microfilms are in the British Collection. Photocopies are not made of these records: the quality of the filming is poor, and photocopies cannot be made readable (the microfilmed cards were destroyed). Names are listed alphabetically by surname. Use the following list to get the film call number

The LDS has posted certain complete census records on their site. It doesn't show on the home page, but as soon as you click Search on the home page, the legend in the first column on the left shows a to "Census". Clicking this then shows a small list that LDS has posted- the 1880 U.S. Census, the 1851 British Isles Census and the 1851 Canadian Census. They can be searched, either together or separately. The 1880 U.S. census is ed to Ancestry.com, and so the images can be opened on an Ancestry loaded computer at the library. Also the library has the 1851 British census and the 1880 U.S. Census in CD ROM form on the shelves, as LDS CD# 009 and # 011 respectively.
The LDS site is just as useful for searching for census or census substitute information abroad as it is for searching in the U.S. For example if you use "Great Britain" as the place name you will get about 478 entries arranged alphabetically. Then by going down to Census you will find about 23 entries. This page will caution you to look also for the Place Names: England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. In addition to looking under the Census Group, some data on census substitutes may be found within the Vital Records Group. Still others may be found as you peruse the lists.
When you do find an item of interest, again click on it to see if the entry has "View Film Notes" on the page. If it does then you can order the film at the library. If there is no "Film Notes" notation, then the entry may be a book, which means that you can call Salt Lake and get someone to reproduce the pages that you want. This can be arranged through our LDS liaison person at the Library.
Using the LDS place names search, you may search for census data for any country. For example for Germany there are 237 hits, 2 for census the first with 59 entries. But under Germany there are Census Substitutes such as Civil Registration, Minorities Lists, Personal Names Lists etc. This same pattern will follow for other countries around the world where the LDS has acquired data.
