Periodicals are an essential adjunct to the study of any subject, containing, as they norly do, articles and papers on the results of the latest research in that particular field, as well as bibliographies and reviews of the relevant literature by expert reviewers. The most important journals in stock at present in the Fingal Local Studies Collection are:

History of Ireland  Archaeology Ireland
Irish Roots  Dublin Historical Record
The Irish Genealogist  Irish Family History
Irish Historical studies  Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland
Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, Section C  Irish Geography
Studia Hibernica  Archivium Hibernicum
Analecta Hibernica  Collectanea Hibernica
Reportorium Novum  Irish Ecclesiastical Record
Irish Economic and Social History  Family Tree Magazine
Practical Family History  The Local Historian
U.K. publications

Two journals, Irish historical Studies and Irish Economic and Social History, are of particular value because of their bibliographical sections: the former, with a sub-section also devoted to research on Irish history in Irish universities during the years 1936-1978, ran an annual listing of writings on Irish and local history; while the latter not only provides (from 1973 to date) a useful select bibliography of Irish social and economic history, but also abstracts of some theses completed during the same period. Both journals also publish regular reports on accessions of manuscript material to important archives such as the National Library and National Archives in Dublin, as well as the Public Record Office of North Ireland in Belfast
