The origin of the Isle Maree cult can definitely be dated to the stone circle, in ca. 100 BC. Early Christianity in Scotland was linked to the Welsh and other British churches in the 6th century, but dominated by Ireland and the missions of Saint Columba from his visit to Iona, 563, also St. Maelrubha to Applecross, Saint Moluag to Lismore, St. Donnan to Eigg. Applecross was one of the earliest Christian settlements in northern Pictland, second only to Iona.

The Inner Sound is a strait separating the Inner Hebridean islands of Skye, Raasay and South Rona from the Applecross peninsula on the Scottish mainland (or headland). The Celtic Gaelic tribe of Scots began to settle a Kingdom of Dalriada (around Argyll) during the early 5th century. Iona, then called Hy, was disputed ground between the Scots and the Picts. The influence of Saint Columba's Culdees of Iona became widespread amongst Scots, Picts and Britons from the late 6th century until well beyond the advent of the Norse Vikings, who were also converted after the end of the first millennium. A loch in the northwest of Islay, in the Inner Hebrides, Loch Gorm lies 12˝ miles (20 km) east of Port Askaig, in flat land towards the north of the Rhinns of Islay near Cloch an tSagairt along the Dingle Peninsula. Loch Gorm derives its name from the stone dwelling where the priest from Glangevlin rested on his way to Ballinaglera to celebrate Mass during the penal times.

In the Irish annals of Tighernac and Ulster, under the date of 668, note is made of the voyage of the sons of Gartnait with the Columban clergy of Skye to Ireland, and their return two years later. Wester Ross lay north of Dalriada, in the territory of the northern Picts. In the days of the Picts, St. Peter was held in preference, from A. D. 710 when Roman usages were adopted, but Andrew claimed the greater number of dedications from the time his relics had been brought to the coast by St. Regulus.

Humans first inhabited Ireland in around 7500 BC, and were later responsible for major Neolithic sites such as Newgrange and Wester Ross. The Balkan region takes its name from the Balkan mountains which run through the centre of Bulgaria into eastern Serbia. The Balkan region was the first area of Europe to experience the arrival of farming cultures in the Neolithic era- the western zone around the Jordan and upper Euphrates rivers gave rise to the first known Neolithic farming settlements. The valley of the March and Oder separates the Carpathians from the Silesian and Moravian chains, which belong to the middle wing of the great Central Mountain System of Europe.
